Somalis in Minneapolis. What can we learn?

On may 23rd Regionförbundet Södra Småland, together with FORES, held a seminar on Somalis’ situation in Sweden. Hussein Samatar, head of the African Development Centre in Minneapolis, was invited to share his experience from the positive integration of Somalis in Minnesota and to discuss what Sweden can learn from their success.

On the 7th of February, FORES together with European Liberal Forum, hosted this years Ralph Dahrendorf seminar, in Brussels. In the presence of Commissioner for home affairs Cecilia Malmström and an audience of around 60 people, a discussion on the best practices and challenges of migration around Europe was being held.

Xenophobia will get stuck when it reaches parliaments

Once racism received parliamentary stronghold it is difficult to get rid of it. Xenophobic parties may then usually get more of a say and contribute to a harder debate climate. It is one of the conclusions of the review of organized racism in Europe as the journalist Lisa Bjurwald made on behalf of Fores.

Positive effects of immigration

Fores believe that immigration is not only good for Sweden - it is completely necessary. Nevertheless, much work to be done before the potential of immigrants in our country are fully used and a successful integration is part of Sweden’s self-image. Fores Migration project aims to identify and highlight examples of successful migration and integration - in Sweden and abroad. Our work is focused on building institutions and provide opportunities for empowerment and entrepreneurship. A another key issue is to find ways to effectively combate xenophobia.
